Oregon 450 vs xperia active pt 3 endomondo

Tuesday was raining and it wasn't suitable for bike training. So I decided to go out for a trail running at Seich Sou forest. This was another chance to test again xperia active and endomondo. Endomondo is the app that I like most, because it supports ANT+, it's easy to use, it doesn't need the use of gps (soit can be used for indoor training) and has a nice and easy to explore website with a lot o information about your workouts. I'm still comparing it with my trustworthy oregon 450. Today I uploaded the 2 gpx archives on both site ridewithgps and endomondo so to compare each other. Until now all fitness apps that I tried on xperia can do multitasking, which means that while you are training and recording your progress, you can also shoot a video/photo, make a phone call ro listen to music. Very useful. Even though these apps are fitness oriented, with multitasking you can also have another apps running in background which can be more geographic such as google maps or my trucks so to watch other info like elevation, altitude or grade. I started with battery level at 95% and after 2 hours of training, shooting video and playing, I ended up with 70%. If you buy endomondo pro you can have the low power mode which use less power and makes battery drain slower. Niiice.

Today the 29+ km/h of wind wasn't enough to keep me inside. So I charged the batteries and went out for the weeks endurance road bike training.
This time I tested mapmyride application which is preloaded in xperia active. I put it in my pocket and started. 129 km to Kalikrateia and back. With the wind on my back everything was ok but at the return it was like going uphill to Kaimaktsalan dragging 3 others with a rope.
Back home and I uploaded the 2 gpx on the internet.
1st thing I disliked in mapmyride is that it needs an internet connection to save the workout, which means that if you go for a weekend on a mountain and want to do 2 workouts, that will be impossible.
2nd thing I disliked is that mapmyrides site doesn't show many details of the workout, just the same things as on your phones screen.
Also mapmyride overestimate the calories consumption as the same does with the total elevation.
So until now, endomondo - mapmyride 4-0.
As for the battery I started with 100% and after 5.5 hours of gps, ANT+, 2 phone calls and some playing, it was at 50% but with the display off because it was in my back pocket.
Also I just found out that mapmyride does not have an embed option and I had to put it with a link, so it goes endomondo - mapmyride 5-0.

Today I went for trail running at Seich Sou forest. Although I started to follow the Aethlos race route, I changed my mind and followed another one, which was 16+ km in less than 2 hours. Today I also tested for the first time my sony ericsson xperia active with endomondo for training/racing use. This smartphone except for being waterproof, is also compatible with ANT+ protocol. Which means that it can be connected with Garmin heart rate monitor straps, when other smartphones needs battery draining bluetooth straps. So I tested endomondo in comparison to my Garmin Oregon 450 which I always use and uploaded the 2 gpx archives on ridewithgps for oregon and endomondo for xperia active. I started with xperias battery level at 95% and after 2 hours of use (gps and ANT+) it was at 60%. There are a lot of applications for android and I'll try to test as many as I can. Use of smartphones seems to be very practical because they are light enough and they are always in our pocket, but I think their batteries are not ready yet for ultra marathons.

Επεσε τις προάλλες το μάτι μου στη σελίδα του Αεθλου και μου έκανε εντύπωση το σημείο που έλεγε ''σε μια απαιτητική διαδρομή''. Τι ακριβώς εννοεί άραγε; Ετσι λοιπόν αποφάσισα να το ανακαλύψω. Εψαξα και βρήκα τη διαδρομή σε gpx την έβαλα στο garmin και ξεκίνησα. Τα πρώτα χιλιόμετρα ανηφορικά, μονοπατίσια κι όλα οκ. Οσο το υψόμετρο μεγάλωνε έκαναν την εμφάνισή τους τα πρώτα χιόνια. Η χθεσινή χιονόπτωση ήταν τελικά μεγαλύτερη απ ότι φανταζόμουνα. Απ τα 350 μέτρα και πάνω, όλα κάτασπρα. Τα μονοπάτια χιονισμένα σε όλο τους το μήκος και στις ανηφόρες έκανα δυο βήματα μπροστά κι ένα πίσω. Στα βραχώδη περάσματα είτε ανηφορικά είτε κατηφορικά, υπήρχαν καταρακτάκια απ τα χιόνια που έλλιωναν και σε έκακαν να νομίζεις οτι κάνεις canyoning. Στα επίπεδα σημεία, παντού νερολακούβες, ενώ σε κάποιες έπρεπε να κάνω τον Ιντιάνα Τζόουνς για να περάσω απέναντι. Είδα μονοπάτια (μή ποδηλατήσιμα δυστηχώς) τα οποία ούτε που τα ήξερα. Τα τελευταία χιλιόμετρα διάφοροι πόνοι σε τετρακέφαλους, αστραγάλους και τένοντες άρχισαν να κάνουν αισθητή την παρουσία τους. Επιστροφή στ αμάξι ολοκληρώνοντας τη διαδρομή σε 3 ώρες ακριβώς (πέρσυ ο πρώτος έκανε στον αγώνα 2 ώρες). Εχω πολύ δρόμο ακόμα μπροστά μου αν και ο χρόνος είναι ικανοποιητικός δεδομένων των καιρικών συνθηκών αλλά και του γεγονότος οτι έχει μόλις 2 μήνες που ξεκίνησα να τρέχω. Εν το μεταξύ η υποθερμία έχει γίνει πλέον η ερωμένη μου.

Το πρόγραμμα προπόνησης για την Τετάρτη έλεγε Κ4 ή αλλιώς κάψιμο τετρακεφάλων. Πρώτη φορά για το 2012 στα Πηγάδια με 3 αναβάσεις συνολικής υψομετρικής 1800 m σε μόλις 7 χιλιόμετρα. Αυτο θα πει κάψιμο. Δοκίμασα τις καινούριες μου ορειβατικές μπότες Technica οι οποίες είναι εξαιρετικές, άνετες, ελαφριές χωρίς να κουράζουν στην πολύωρη χρήση. Είχα και κάποια στιγμή παρέα το φίλο Γιώργο από Νάουσα με τον οποίο κάναμε μια ανάβαση μαζί. Η μέρα καταπληκτική, το χιόνι θα μπορούσε να είναι καλύτερο. Σε αναμονή νέων χιονοπτώσεων.

Πρώτη μέρα λειτουργίας του χιονοδρομικού 3-5 Πηγάδια και φυσικά δεν έχασα ευκαιρία. Πέδιλα, μπότες κι όλα τα συναφή ήταν ήδη στ αμάξι μέρες πριν. Ο δρόμος καθαρός παρά τις έντονες χιονοπτώσεις των προηγούμενων ημερών και η μέρα ηλιόλουστη. Είχα όρεξη για ορειβατικό σκι (και μάλλον μ αυτό θ ασχοληθώ φέτος) κι έτσι έβαλα φώκιες και ξεκίνησα την ανάβαση από Παράδεισο και Λούκι. Εφτασα κορυφή κι από κει ξεκίνησα την πολύ δύσκολη κατάβαση προς καταφύγιο και τελικά απ το μονοπάτι του Παράδεισου. Και λέω πολύ δύσκολη γιατί το χιόνι ήταν πολύ αφράτο και ξερό με αποτέλεσμα τα πέδιλά μου παρόλο που είναι φαρδιά, να βουλιάζουν σε πολλά σημεία ακόμη και 30-40 cm. Ακόμη και στην κατηφόρα δεν γλιστρούσα και αναγκαζόμουν σε πολλά σημεία να περπατάω. Μόλις σφίξει όμως το χιόνι τότε θα είναι ιδανικά.

Here I will upload waypoints of springs or other drinkable water on Greek mountains. You can download these waypoints by pressing the Kml link (under the header) and convert it to gpx (for use with your gps device) with gpsvisualizer.com. In GpsVisualizer, upload the file in the green table, choose gpx file and then press Go!
On top of the page there is a link which says Click to download bla bla bla.gpx. That s it. You can now upload these water waypoints to your gps. Enjoy

Round of Pikrolimni road race. The day was perfect and I started warmed up very well, as I went there cycling. The pace was very strong from the start but I managed to keep up with the second group till the end placing second in my category. Third race, third medal. That's a great start for the season.

At Seich Sou forest, North Greece MTB Championship took place. After a very good start, I entered second in the first uphill trail, just a few meters behind the first. When the trail started to go down, and while I was trying to find an open section to pass over the first rider, I had a flat tyre. So I had to stop to pump it, but unfortunately I had forgotten my CO2 cartridge at home. I started to inflate it with my pump and losing precious time. I continued racing with only a few psi in the tyre, and managed to placed second.

Sunday 20-02-11. Maybe the best day of the season. The weather was great and the snow just perfect, especially the early hours. There was enough people but there wasn't any problem on the trucks or the lifts. I met Petros and with Chris we went to Paradeisos trail from mountaineering refuge. Perfect weather, perfect snow and perfect company. This is what I call a perfect day.

Today me and George enjoyed a great day at the resort. The sun was shining and the snow wasn't bad at all. After 5 downhills we went for mountaineering ski from resorts base to the top of the mountain and watched the view to Kaimaktsalan, Jena and mount Olympus. We all hope to snow again soon.

Today was the first time I went for skiing for the season. The worst season I can remember. There wasn't any snow at all, and half the resort was not accessible. I went to 3-5 Pigadia with George and Angelos and the day was perfect with great sunshine (but with just a little snow). We all hope that the snow will return. We'll see.

Wednesday 19-01-11. A perfect day so I wanted to see the view from above. So I went for Hortiatis mountain uphill all the way to the radar 2 km beyond the finish line of the well known race. At the return I met with 15 other cyclists with the same idea. I didn't have the helmet mounting for the camera so I mount it with two straps on the handlebar and shot a video on the downhill. From now on I will be doing this uphill once a week.

Happy New Year to all. Sunday 02/01/2011 was the first road bike training for the new year. We began (after the greetings and the like) about 40 people, with our dear Mr. Georgiadis telling us about the route, without giving much importance to what he was saying. Until the good staff came. Ascent from Vasilika to Monopigado through a dirt road. Some of course did not dare that, despite it was quite rideable, and turned back. 3 enjoyable hours and around 70 km.
A pleasant surprise was the presence of Michael Antonoglou, which although seemingly quite weak, followed at some point, our train. Happy new year with a lot of training km.

The first snow came. I took the opportunity and with Anthony started climbing to Chortiatis mountain. We met at 13:00 at Agios Paulos and cross the Sheich Sou forest from snowy dirt roads. The winter landscape was so beautiful and the weather cold. We went to the antenna park of Chortiatis and continued through the dirt road to mountain refuge. Everything around was snowed. And not just white, but with enough snow. The hands of Anthony were freezing as his selection of gloves wasn't the best. Games with snow and drifting here and there. Of course every now and then people with SUVs they found the opportunity to drive them once a year in the soil. It must have been in the forest about 20 cars some of them rev up so much that it sounded to the village. Back from Panorama cause we didn't have much time as it was getting dark.

Today we went for road bike training with Kostantinidis Costas. The classic route, Thessaloniki, Souroti, Vasilika, Galatista, Agios Prodromos and return through Raidestos. 100 km with the temperature to minus. We saw the first snow after Galatista. It was just a few but certainly something.

Sunday 12-12-10 and the established road bike training, takes tour dimensions (though not lacking those who turn it into a race forcing others to go to the max and the group eventually scatters). The route was Redestos, Galatista, Poligiros (with a stop for tea that had brought the car escort) and return Simantra, Triglia and eventually Trílofon. The day was just amazing at the beginning as at the return we had enough wind, which together with many kilometers we had done, made it difficult enough. 148 km in 6 hours and as always the video and track.

Sunday with a spectacular sunny sky but enough wind (they said 4 Beaufort but I think it should have been at least 6) the standard meet for road bike training was extremely successful. We started at 09:00 from Vulgary and met with guys from Velos at the way to Phoenikas. All together 67 people (even Weasel came from Kilkis). The car drivers were looking, as we went out for protest. The wind was blowing from our back at the beginning so we were traveling at crazy speed on the way to Moudania. After turning for Triglia the pain started as we were riding against the wind. Passing through villages, the old men in the cafes were looking at us with admiration. They were rather surprised to see so many cyclists together. Back from Trilofos where the strong wind didn't let us enjoy the downhill. 120 km in total from my house in 4 enjoyable hours.

Long ago, trying to decide in which site to upload my tracks, I accidentally made the following discovery. Any site or software,for the same gpx file, gave quite different results, especially regarding the altitude and the total distance.The scientist in me woke up and began to search. I contacted the owners of various sites (Garmin, everytrail) etc, but everyone was telling his own. Generally the answers did not satisfy. I searched the internet and found that there are others with the same questions.The explanation, after some searching, it is ultimately very simple and is as follows. The total elevation difference emerges by adding the individual ascents. This is done by using an algorithm, which determines the ascents and aggregates. The problem arises because each software uses its own algorithm. Now you say and which is the right one? The answer is none and all.The gps track record and store the position of each point. All points together makes a track. These points also include noise. That is why they have created different algorithms, which try to eliminate this noise, and also the fault of the gps. Essentially they are smoothing the elevation of our track, or else they are correcting it. If left uncorrected is definitely wrong. At this point to say that either use a barometric altimeter gps or not, the result is the same. Again uploading our files in different software, would get different results.What I ultimately did is that. I uploaded some of my tracks at known sites, software and compared them together.The result is tragic. The differences are between 50 and 1000 meters in elevation. What I noticed is that the only showing similarities between them (I would say that is exactly the same) are the Garmin conect using elevation correction and sporttracks. They also gives the correct distances, the ona that it is showing on the gps screen.One of my experiments was this. Compared the elevation of the route of the MTB race in Xirolivado, with the one of my friend Geron, which has a barometric altimeter gps. The Garmin conect and sporttrakcs were the only ones that gave identical results. (My 60cx doesn't have barometric altimeter).Another experiment was to record the same track twice on different days and compare the gpx files between the. Also Garmin conect and sporttracks gave the same numbers. All other out of place and time. So I came to the conclusion that these two are the most reliable. And do not forget that Mom Garmin support and endorse the sporttracks reliability. They surely know better. They are not accidentally, t he dominant manufacturer of gps in the world.Now on the distances. The gps calculate the distance in two dimensions rather than three. This means that when an uphill climb, the device calculates the horizontal distance and not the one we did. So we have error. The question is how large this error is. Suppose an uphill climb and the gps says it is 5 km distance and 300 meters of elevation. According to the Pythagorean theorem (the square of the hypotenuse equals the sum of the squares of the other two sides) the actual distance traveled is 5009 meters. Practically negligible for ordinary mortals. And a more extreme example, even the uphill we did is 100 kilometers and the elevation difference 3. The actual distance traveled is 100 045 meters. An error of 45 meters to 100 kilometers. I do not think are worth mentioning. Surely the bigger the slope and reduced the distance increases the error, eg a climber may see crazy numbers.And do not forget that top athletes of cycling and running are using gps in training and races.

Greece is one of a few countries, where one day you go for skiing and the other for windsurfing or swimming. And this in spring of course. So after the end of the ski season for me, the water sports season begun today. First day at the beach for 2010. The forecast said that the wind would be about 4 Bf but unfortunately was less than 2. Never mind. The sun was shining and sea was cold but great. I had 5 months to go for windsurf but I did it very well. This summer seems that will be a great one and also I have to learn more moves on my board.

The last day of the season 09-10 for me and it was at Kaimaktsalan ski resort (where I also met Aeras and Sirios). There is enough snow for ski but after 40 days of skiing and the upcoming race season I'm stopping for this year. Now an other season starts, bike racing, windsurfing and diving, so stay tuned.

30 days ago at Elatohori ski resort when I was at the top of the mountain, my Salomon Z12 bindings broke and I had to go down with only one ski. I was putting it from left to right foot till I got down at the base. The bindings were destroyed so I started the search for new ones. Finally I bought the Marker Duke and this is the first day I'm using them. Great bindings that can be easily transformed to mountaineering by turning a switch. The best for aggressive downhill and also uphill.

YES. Today I broke my personal downhill speed record.My old one was 79.9 km/h and the new one is 81.5 km/h.
